What is Geocaching?

Geocaching - the game for GPS users who enjoy taking advantage of technology and the outdoors combined with the thrill of a treasure hunt! Fantastic for all you techies out there and a superb family game too!

Through word of mouth, press articles, and even accidental cache discoveries, more and more people have become involved in geocaching... it's a fantastic way to get out and about and discover all the wonders the environment has to offer as well as discovering just what your GPS unit is capable of.

Though Geocaching is a relatively young sport it’s attracting huge volumes of participants globally and finding that hidden cache is becoming more and more popular every single day. Originating from the US (where else!) it combines using the internet, the fastest growing means of communication there is, with getting out there and having fun! Not only enjoyed by adults (though brings out the kid in all of us, not to mention nurturing our competitive spirit!) Geocaching is a wonderful way introduce children to the basic skills of navigation. Alternatively – give that Sunday stroll in the countryside that added bit of zest!

Essentially individuals and organisations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. If you’re in any doubt as to how this craze is gripping the globe there are 1000's of caches in 134 countries around the world with more than 800 located right across the UK.

Once you’ve identified the cache or caches you’re going to set out to find, using the clues provided and your GPS unit you’re off… let it be said though that actually finding the hidden cache may not be quite as easy as it seems!

Upon location of the hidden cache the specially designed ‘Geocaching Log Book’ should be signed and all the locator is asked to do is try to leave something for the cache – adding to that much desired treasure trove!
