3D Relief Maps (often referred to as Raised Relief Maps) are beautiful 3-Dimensional pieces of wall art that physically illustrate the peaks and valleys of some of the most beautiful landscapes of the world. At Above and Beyond we have an amazing choice of 3D Relief Maps with a variety of framing options. The range includes UK National Parks and a British Isles and World map. These raised relief maps are perfect for educational purposes or as a piece of wall art.
A 3D Relief Map is a concept that has organically grown out of more standard methods of relief display. For instance, the use of contour lines has for many years been a much more prevalent technique for showing relief. Contour lines integrate the number of feet above sea level and are basically a bunch of curved lines stacked upon each other leading from valley to peak. You will no doubt be familiar with this from the nation’s favourite map, the OS Map.
It is more the raised or shaded relief map, however, that the 3D relief map has taken it roots from. These maps offer a much more visually engaging presentation of relief. Through the use of colour shading they depict the land as it would look from above should a shadow be cast upon it. This gives a much easier to translate idea of what the area would actually look like should the map reader visit the location. 3D relief maps are essentially shaded relief maps brought alive by the moulding of 3D peaks. This makes the 3D relief map cartographically the most pleasurable to the senses. Not only can you see how the land looks from above but you can also touch it. In many ways it is like being a giant reaching down from the skies to touch the earth. N.B. A 3D Relief Map can often be referred to as a Raised Relief Map in some quarters.
