Many of the routes are focussed upon reservoirs, valleys and the edges of the moors, where there are obvious landmarks to guide the way. Elsewhere, the vast, featureless spaces may appear intimidating to the inexperienced, but most of the described walks follow discernible paths, which, in fine weather, should present no great difficulty to the sensible novice.
This collection has been chosen to explore the many different aspects of the countryside and sometimes include or lie close to another attraction. For example, there are several splendid show caves around Castleton as well as its castle, a grand house and gardens at Lyme Park and even the chance to take a unique trip on a barge through the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country at Marsden.
Welcoming country pubs and village cafes appear on or near many of the walks, but if you intend relying on them for something to eat, it is as well to check in advance that they will be open when you pass. Having said all that, all that remains is for you to choose your walk and set off.
